"Jade Fish and the Master" is a trilogy set in the late Chou Dynasty around 280 BCE. It's about Jade Fish, a 13-year-old kitchen girl, who is in difficulty and has no family she can turn to. She is offered help by Lao Tzu, the famous Taoist philosopher. Legend has it that Lao Tzu, the ageing archivist of the Chou emperor, sickened by man's inhumanity, decided to pass through to the forbidden lands of the west on one last journey to the high mountains of what is now known as Tibet. He received help from a gatekeeper, Yin Hsi, to cross the frontier. In exchange for his help, Lao Tzu left the gatekeeper the sum of his teachings in a beautiful work of poetic philosophy called the Tao Te Ching (or the Book of the Pathway to Supreme Virtue). Before he can do all this, however, the two of them will have first to help this lonely girl, who is in distress and needs their guidance.

Volume One, Jade Fish and the Master (Fu - The Turning Point), deals with their efforts to track down the young girl's mysterious history. The unknown Jade Fish turns out to be a princess and the heir to the Peacock Throne in this far western Chou kingdom. As they track down her parentage, we learn about Lao Tzu's riddling philosophy for achieving happiness both in private and in public life. But the Tao is not an easy path to follow.

About Paddy Salmon:

Paddy Salmon has been a teacher of English literature and drama all his life, in France, England and West Africa. he studied at Cambridge University, where he became very interested in the T'ai Chi Chuan, the Tao Te Ching and the I Ching. He has written short stories and plays in English for teenagers and collaborated on books for teaching English. He is half-French and lives in France.

In the author's own words: "I love the poetry, the humour, the wisdom and the mystery of the Tao Te Ching. This is what prompted me to write a story based on its philosophy and China's fascinating past. I managed to buy a c.2,500-year-old Chou Dynasty green jade pendant, whose hidden history further inspired my imagination. I have also become a grandfather and I wanted to create a grandfatherly role-model (Taoist-style) I could aspire to. I am lucky to have had the chance to travel in China on two occasions in recent years."
