Yi Hong was born in the 1950s in the heavily flooded City of Wuhan in Central China, therefore his real name literally means "control the floods". In the 1960s he witnessed the man-made disaster that was the Cultural Revolution. By the end of that decade, he as a young intellectual was "sent down" to the countryside to "learn from the farmers and workers". He worked in the 1970s as a factory worker, then studied at the Shanghai Tech University to become an engineer. He worked as a senior engineer in the 1990s and was involved in various business management projects.

Yi Hong has always cared about issues concerning the Chinese society and culture. Since 1980s, he has published widely in China's newspapers and magazines as well as online.
